Chapter Thirteen

“Oh, look who’s come up for air,” Claire said when Liam walked into the lounge.

The all-too-familiar blush burned across his face.

“Leave the lad alone,” Dolly told her. “If I had a handsome Italian to crawl into bed with, you wouldn’t see me for days.”

“Where is Casanova?” Claire asked.

“He’s ringing his uncle,” Liam said, sinking down on the sofa next to her.

Dolly sat in the chair by the window, smoking. “The big gangster who’s going to finish Jonny Wellingham,” she mused. “Now this is going to be worth seeing.”

Dolly’s lounge had been expensively decorated. It seemed strange because the high rise wasn’t exactly the Ritz. Claire and Liam sat on an overstuffed floral sofa and Dolly’s chair was bright yellow. They both clashed with the purple rug and mustard walls, but somehow it all worked.

Liam wondered why she stayed here if she had done so well for money. “I meant to ask you,” he said to Claire. “What about Gina and Deb?”

Claire passed him a joint and stretched out, putting her feet in his lap. “They got away. Thanks to you.”

“I’m a regular saviour today, aren’t I?”

Dolly stubbed her cigarette out and set about rolling them another joint. “Don’t you put yourself down, young man. You’ve made a massive step today. But the right one. That’s the main thing.”

Hearing it from someone as experienced as Dolly felt reassuring. Something he needed at that moment.

Marco came into the room and stood in the doorway awkwardly.

“Come on in,” Dolly said with a warm glow about her. “How are you feeling?”

“Still a bit sore,” he said.

Marco sat down on the floor with his back to Liam who couldn’t resist reaching out and stroking those curls. Claire caught his eye and gave him a wink.

“How was your uncle?” Liam asked.

“He’s not happy with me,” Marco replied. “I wasn’t supposed to make a move. I was just meant to set up the stock, sound out some supply lines and wait until he could get here.”

Liam put his hand on Marco’s shoulder. “You’ve done pretty well setting up supply without Jonny hearing about it.”

“I brought a van load with me,” Marco said. “When I realised how tight he’s got this place sewn up, I wanted to fuck things up first. But Uncle Z won’t listen. He thinks I’ve acted too hastily and shown our hand.”

“Where are you keeping it?” Claire said. “Not in the posh flat, surely.”

“As if,” Marco replied. “I keep moving the van around. It’s in the car park of the flats at the moment.”

“Fucking hell, you’re taking a risk, aren’t you?” Dolly said. “You should have listened to your uncle though. Taking that piece of shit for everything won’t be easy.”

“It’s taking so bloody long and I wanted to show him… Well, after Naples,” Marco said.

Dolly lit the joint and exhaled loudly. “What happened in Naples?”

Marco sighed. “I fucked up royally. Some stupid copper in Venice found out we had her boss on the payroll. So, we dealt with her, although we didn’t finish the job and two bloody tourists led us on a merry dance all the way to frigging Naples.
